Does the corona pandemic affect your eating habits?

The corona pandemic came as a shock to the entire world population. So far, we do not know exactly what long-term effects the pandemic will have, neither on ourselves nor for society as a whole, but we know that it requires a strong adjustment in our daily lives. The way we meet other people is constantly affected and things that we previously took for granted, such as meeting their grandparents, are suddenly not possible.   Right now we are in a situation where we have to adapt to new routines and how we interact with each other. Attefall (2020, 13 sep) skriver i SVT Nyheter that the isolation during the corona pandemic leads to increased concern for people suffering from eating disorders. Problems such as having difficulty eating, anxiety about infection and more periods of binge eating have increased. Cynthia Bulik, professor at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden, is leading a study on how the pandemic affects people with eating disorders. The isolation leads to increased feelings of anxiety that affect eating habits. The majority of those included in the study suffer from anorexia nervosa and they state that they eat less and have more difficulty following their meal plans and for people with bulimia, the periods of binge eating have increased. This is mainly due to the fact that we have to adapt to changing routines and social isolation. But just spending a lot of time at home at kitchen tables and refrigerators can be a trigger for many people who suffer from eating disorders and cause feelings of anxiety. Progress Me offers a tool that makes it possible for those who need to keep better track of their eating habits, namely your digital food diary. Whether you yourself suffer from an eating disorder or have someone close to you who does, a food diary can help the sufferer keep track of how much, what and when they eat during the day. Because we will need to continue to adapt to an everyday life where we can not socialize and meet people in the same way as we did before and where we may have to spend more time at home than outside. That is why we need help and find new solutions.   It is important to remember that the food diary is for those who are in the treatment of an eating disorder and is not recommended to be used if you are in the early stages of an eating disorder, as it can then be perceived as triggering or used for the wrong purpose. If you are in the early stages of developing an eating disorder, we recommend that you go in and do our exercises in our app. In your food diary, you can easily follow your eating routines and keep track of how much you should eat and what you have eaten during the day. You must also fill in the feelings that arise in connection with the meal in order to then be able to follow up on how you have been affected by them. There are no requirements in the food diary about what your plate should look like, but we hope that you get all the nutrients that your body needs to feel good.   The goal of the food diary is to de-dramatize the associations that arise in connection with meals, and to remind that food gives us the energy we need to be able to do what we need to do during the day. Food is not something that hurts us, although thoughts can say the opposite. At first it may feel a little scary to write down what you eat but try it for a few weeks and see how it affects you. We recommend that you use the food diary in connection with support from a doctor, psychologist or other healthcare contact. It is important to remember that you are not alone and that there is always someone else you can talk to, whether it is physically or digitally. Do you know someone who may need support and advice or if you yourself are in a situation where you want someone to talk to, go to our forum and write to someone who can help you - or give support to someone else. And if it was needed earlier, it is needed even more now.   To access the food diary and our exercises, you can download our app for free on the App Store or Google Play by clicking the link below. You can also go in and write on our forum if you need support or want to help someone else.
